Course Description:
Explore the world of off camera flash and start taking pictures that look like the pros'. Gain confidence by learning the equipment, camera settings and lighting techniques used when "speedlights" are fired remotely.
This class will help you to ditch your on-camera pop-up flash, which leaves your photos flat. Speedlights are small, portable flash units that can be used while mounted on or off-camera. They are battery-powered and can be "fired" remotely using "triggers."
The focus of this class is getting your flash source OFF the camera... where creative lighting techniques begin in unique locations. There are a lot of confusing strategies, settings and equipment to learn to create these jaw-dropping effects... all of which begin to make sense through a four week class with IPC.
Topics Covered:- Review of Manual exposure mode
- Basic Speedlight function
- Modifiers, triggers and stands
- Controlling and shaping your light
- On location portrait lighting techniques
Students taking this class must have a speedlight with a "hotshoe" on the bottom (a bracket which fits on the top of your camera), and a way to manually control the power output of the flash. Other than that, you're only limited by how much you want to spend.
Wireless triggers are suggested for the class. A wireless trigger causes the flash to fire when it is remote (off-camera). PocketWizards are the industry standard, but your instructor will discuss great alternatives that are much more cost-effective during the 1st session.
This is a second level course. Students must have taken the Fundamentals of Photography class, or its equivalent, and have a working knowledge of their camera.
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Photography
Required Equipment: DSLR Camera (Digital Single Lens Reflex), speedlight flash, two full sets of batteries for your flash
Suggested equipment: Wireless Triggers (These will be discussed in depth during session 1. You will not need them until session 2), speedlight and camera manuals
"Indy Photo Coach is a great alternative to an otherwise boring, classroom-like setting. Real hands-on experience with knowledgable, professional and enthusiastic photographers makes the class truly like any other. You will love this class and you will learn so much. I highly recommend it!!" -Holle Psota, Recent Student
